Have you thought about increasing your home’s energy efficiency? LED Lightbulbs are a worthy investment!

Last week we talked about our experience with using our Renogy 200-Watt Solar Suitcase.

Our goal in implementing solar is to use it to provide all of our DC power needs in our RV. In this process, it became clear we needed to increase our power efficiency to achieve this goal.

RVs come with fully integrated DC Battery systems to run onboard lights and whatnot.

We were still using the old RV incandescent lightbulbs and it turns out they are quite the energy suckers!

So, we installed LED light bulbs inside and outside our RV. This immediately increased our efficiency by significantly lowering our amps and thus increasing our potential run time off of our house batteries exponentially.

There are so many great benefits to using LEDs in your RV!

Here are just a few:
1 - lower your amps up to 90%
2 - last up to 50 times longer
3 - hold up well to jarring and bumping
4 - reduce heat build-up around light fixtures
5 - 30% more downlight
6 - no mercury

That’s right – no mercury! That means huge mitigation of toxic mercury from our waste and our streams. This is reason enough alone to make the switch!

The brand we went with for our LEDs is ARCON. Arcon has the industry-leading 5-year warranty on their LEDs! Also, their website is an excellent resource for information on LED technologies.

There are some color and light quality differences. Soft white bulbs are preferred for ambiance and less blue light. When selecting your LEDs for inside your home or RV, we recommend the soft white.

The one drawback is the sticker shock – purchasing LEDs is quite a bit more expensive. But, when you weigh the pros and cons, you can see these are totally worth it!
